Christmas

Christmas

The film was considered as one of the most impactful ads of 2018. Lovers and haters passionately discussed it in news items, TV shows, columns and (of course) social media.

Cinematography

As the supermarket’s brand line and strategic mission is to eat well, the Christmas twist on this line was to eat well together. The aim was to make this come to life in a way anyone and everyone in the Netherlands could relate to. This led us to focus on family recipes, and the way they have the power to bring families together. Even when a family member has recently passed away.

With this film we wanted to outdo the craft of last year’s Christmas ad, by being even more careful with our cinematography, choice of music, casting and of course the emotional subject matter. But then with a slightly different twist by not shying away from some of the more bittersweet feelings at this time of the year.

The film was shot by one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated DOP’s, who is known for using light in a very powerful way. And since he had affinity with the subject he could achieve the delicacy and intimate storytelling that the script required.

Music

But then with a slightly different twist by not shying away from some of the more bittersweet feelings at this time of the year.

In order to let the film come across it needed the right soundtrack. After an extensive music search we found the perfect emotion in Robbie Williams’ song: She’s the One. As long as it’s a woman who sings the lyrics. So we teamed up with award-winning singer-songwriter Frances, who did a great job covering the song. By the time the film aired we even released the cover as a single. This resulted in lots of streams on Spotify, Deezer and all national radio stations.

After last year’s success PLUS Supermarket briefed us to create another memorable Christmas ad.
