Google: 20th Birthday Doodle

Google: 20th Birthday Doodle

On 27 September, Google.com celebrated its 20th birthday with an animated doodle featuring 20 original scenes based on 20 original searches that defined each year.

We needed to show different search queries from 20 different countries so our mixed media approach really tied well in this concept of individuality, embracing the idea of showing different signatures while staying cohesive with the Google brand.

Google didn’t share any view stats but we managed to Google this(!) and came up with the following info:

Google processes over 40,000 search queries every second on average, which translates to over 3.5 billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.

This concludes that our Google Doodle should have been seen by quite some people..

We went for a mixed media approach where we created small separate projects for each single search query. We made sure everything stayed cohesive through colour palette, timing / rhythm and design. Showcasing a wide spectrum of craft, combining 2D & 3D and flexing our traditional animation muscles by incorporating frame-by-frame and stop motion techniques.

This modular approach made it possible to finish this project within 3 weeks from brief to export!

We were briefed by Google to create an Animation for their homepage, a Google Doodle honouring their 20th Anniversary. This animation should include top search queries from 20 different countries, from the past 20 years up until now.
