Into the Great Wide Open 2018

Campaign for the 2018 Into the Great Wide Open festival, Vlieland.

And after decades of opening borders and taking down walls, we now live in a time where borders are being redrawn and building walls is a hot topic. However, the way these walls were crafted, plays with reality and the actual use of borders. At first it clouds the reality, they feel mysterious. But with a closer look, you discover that the are created in real life and digital at the same time. The bright colors makes you feel festive and eerie and the same time.

The theme and the festival go hand in hand in the campaign. The works leaves you with questions, but at the same time makes you want to experience the festival and the island.

The festival theme in 2018 was ‘De Vrije Ruimte’ (The Free Space). A theme that could be interpreted as personal space, or it could be a critical note about the festival itself. But even it could question who owns our sky.. is it owned by Google? Space-X? But how do you visualize ‘De Vrije Ruimte'?You only know where free space ends when it is restricted, or better; confined. Whether this is through a fence or a law that limits us, you realize there was freedom when it is no longer there. This idea was the reason for a play on space and residual space, which resulted in huge colorful structures on the island of Vlieland. Although; the visual walls and blockades are not very restrictive. You could walk around like that. And even more so; are the walls actually there? Or are they pure echoes of what was there?

Design a campaign around the theme 'free space' for the multidisciplinary music and arts festival Into The Great Wide Open. Ideally there would be a role for the island, Vlieland, in the campaign.
