Metamorphosis creates contemporary, empowered icons for a new generation of women.Lois Cohen wants to tweak people’s ideas about classic female icons, because for a large part representation of women now are still based on these outdated concepts.
Metamorphosis is an editorial series in which visual artists Lois Cohen (photography & concept) and Indiana Roma Voss (styling & concept) attempt to redefine the dialogue of 12 outdated female icons and archetypes. By changing single elements through unexpected styling and diverse casting the meaning of the original image changes and is brought into the now. The intent is to acknowledge the arbitrary hypocrisy of the original images whilst creating new archetypes of empowered females to look up to. This work is another building block in the grand scheme of creating an inclusive society for generations to come.
All photos are made in the United States. Lois has done extensive research prior to making the photos, together with stylist Indiana Roma Voss, who played a big role in making the concept with Lois. They selected their casting and locations carefully. They managed to create these iconic and very strong images by combining extravagant and provocative styling, specific and diverse casting, the use of film material and a cinematographic set up in lighting.
Lois Cohen created this series as her graduation project of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Before she even graduated, the work already got published in Vogue Italia. She decided to exhibit 'Metamorphosis' in the Melkweg Gallery Amsterdam, which was a huge success.

It goes beyond creating a fashion series and comes across as effortless whilst expressing the artists own signature and style, which is timeless in this case.
