The Mini Magazine celebrates the first decade of The Gentlewoman and the women who defined it. It brings together the leading image-makers, such as Inez & Vinoodh, Alasdair McLellan and David Sims, and the smart writers, such as Holly Brubach, Sophie Elmhirst and Ann Friedman, who have captured these inspirational women for the magazine over the last 10 years.

For the celebration issue of TGW20, we didn’t want to publish a monograph, but rather do something that stands out as an object and is more tongue in cheek.

Growing up in Germany, my parents owned a stack of thumb dictionaries. Italian – German, French — Spanish and more. Convenient in size, we would take these on vacations. Over the years I collected more miniature books and other objects; the oldest thumb encyclopaedia I own is from the 1860s. Some mass-media magazines publish summer editions which are about DIN A6 size, our mini magazine is a fun exaggeration of that. I started testing sizes and design for the mini magazine a few years back, but it took time for us to get it off the ground. Releasing it for the twentieth issue was a happy coincidence.

It is a self initiated project. There wasn't a brief for the Mini mag as such.

Jury Feedback

DESIGN – EDITORIAL / BRONZE

The jury thinks Gentlewoman's mini mag is a textbook example of good editorial design. It is not only exquisitely designed, just like its big sister, but also a striking format for a ten-year anniversary that is both modest and festive. The magazine contains all cover articles from the past ten years, which are meticulously designed on the 60 x 81 mm pages. A decade of fabulousness in editorial design. In the pocket.
