Creative Collider #7:

The Creative Community Opens Up: Mental Health & Creativity

Doors open 19:00 | Start 19:30

Self-development, time outside work and making a difference are amongst the top definitions of success in the Creative Industry according to the WeTransfer Ideas Report. However, at the same time, in 2022, ‘burnout rates have doubled and creatives are feeling mentally (and physically) exhausted’*. There is a crucial point at which hard work ends, and burnout begins. This isn’t just a case of feeling a bit tired; burnout is real and in our increasingly competitive creative industry, it is important to try to understand why.

During the seventh Creative Collider, we will open up and dive into the insights of the mental health of creatives and discuss what is really going on. From personal stories to statistics, together we will explore what’s happening inside the creative mind, hear about ways of handling pressure, ambition and relaxation, and learn how to get into that mindful state of working.

Speakers

Abbie Robinson is a Copywriter and Journalist. She's helped build a VR exhibition to tell the stories of Holocaust survivors, written about wine and regenerative farming methods, and co-designed a pop-up with Sainsbury’s for Breast Cancer Awareness week. Currently working in-house at WeTransfer where she's responsible for all things words (including the Ideas Report). Ever struggling to pinpoint her interests to one genre, her general rule of thumb is: “If I care about it, I’ll (try) to write about it.”

During our Creative Collider, Abbie will share the findings from the WeTransfer 2022 Ideas Report, covering some statistics, testimonials, and outcomes of our research. She'll also run through her career thus far, sharing some of the things she's learned along the way about mental health at work, and how important it is to put your mental well-being first.

Bruno Sitton is a mindfulness expert and founder of Luminora and promotes mental wellness and self-care in the creative industry. Through his fashion career and cultural studies, he has learned the importance of taking care of one's mind and body in a demanding industry. He designs engaging experiences to inspire others to prioritize their mental well-being, foster a positive work environment and provide deep connections for artists, businesses, and communities.

In this Creative Collider, we join Bruno in a guided meditative experience. From there, he will host a talk about the power of our bodies and the connection between one's purpose and creative pursuits.

Yvette Verhoef is an Occupational Health Doctor at Zorg van de Zaak. She is a medical doctor (again), an enthusiast surfer, a Mother, and self-proclaimed queen of multitasking, switching jobs, and having fun.

Toby Castle-Smith is a creative focused on finding the culture in communication. A writer that looks to craft an authentic voice with plenty of personality into campaigns, prioritizing purposeful resonance, humor, and relatability. Originally from Hampshire, UK, Toby has been part of the Adidas team at TBWA\Neboko for over 5 years, and as a Senior Copywriter strives to create sports communications that feel real, fun, and representative of the cultures they aim to be part of.

Together, Yvette and Toby will give the audience a creative and professional perspective on burnout, what your employer can do for you, and most importantly, what you can do to help yourself.

Given the sensitivity of the topic, we want to create a safe space for each story. We therefore encourage everyone who wants to, to open up and share, or reconsider visiting this specific Creative Collider if you don't feel like this is your topic. Following the presentations, there will be a Q&A between the speakers and the audience.

Creative Collider is a series of monthly appointments where ADCN | Club For Creativity members and Soho House guests come together to experience and discuss the best artists and innovators in the Netherlands. Once a month, a group of creative minds from disparate fields will be brought together on stage to showcase their vision on a common subject, challenge the audience and each other, and expand their understanding through multiple points of view. To showcase the multicultural spirit of the creative community in the Netherlands, our line up will welcome local and international speakers from the fields of art, architecture, advertising, design, film, music, science, and the list goes on. We do this to foster interdisciplinary dialogue beyond nationalism, prejudices and expert (or non-expert) biases on the subjects.

In an intimate setting at Soho House, we aim to (re)create what people have missed the most over these past years: real and tangible connections with like-minded and inspiring people. The audience will be encouraged to actively participate, ask questions and mingle with speakers and attendees with drinks before and after the talks.
